How We Rank HVAC Companies
The default order in our directory is “Recommended” — a score computed from objective,
verifiable data. This page documents the formula exactly as it runs in our code
(src/lib/companies.ts, function scoreCompany). No human adjusts
individual rankings, and no company can buy its way up the list.
The formula
| Component | Weight | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| License | 30% | An active TDLR air conditioning contractor license, verified in the public registry. No verified license → the company is not listed at all. |
| Reviews | 30% | Google rating (out of 5) multiplied by log₁₀(review count + 1), normalized against the best performer in the dataset. A 4.9★ company with 8 reviews scores lower than a 4.8★ company with 500 — both quality and evidence matter. |
| Profile completeness | 40% | Fraction of profile fields we could verify and fill: photo, website, service list, service area, year founded, emergency availability. Complete profiles signal an established, reachable business. |
Planned next: a BBB complaints component (20%) — it will be carved out of the completeness weight (final split 30/30/20/20) once we finish collecting BBB data.
What does NOT influence ranking
- Money. Companies can't pay for placement, badges, or the “24/7” label. There is no “Angi Approved” equivalent here and never will be.
- Referral relationships. Companies we may earn a referral fee from are ranked by the same formula as everyone else.
- Advertising. We don't sell sponsored positions in the list.
- Review markup games. Google ratings appear as text with attribution — we never mark up third-party ratings in structured data, so rankings can't be influenced by schema tricks either.
Filters are yours
“Recommended” is a starting point, not a verdict. Use the filters (service, area, 24/7, 4.5★ and up, License Class A) and the sort control to re-order the list by rating, review count or name — filtering happens on your device, and we don't create hidden “filtered” pages for search engines.
